Status Anxiety

Definition:
Status anxiety is the persistent concern about one’s social position, worth, or perceived success relative to others.

Usage Context:
Seen in consumer culture, workplace dynamics, social media environments, class discourse, and discussions of ambition and self-worth.

Critical Note:
Status anxiety is often treated as a personal insecurity. In practice, it is actively produced by systems that tie dignity, safety, and belonging to visibility, achievement, and comparison. When worth is made conditional, anxiety becomes a stabilising force rather than a malfunction.
