Habit Formation

Definition:
Habit formation is the process by which repeated behaviours become automatic through reinforcement, cues, and reward structures.

Usage Context:
Seen in product design, gamification, social media platforms, workplace systems, health interventions, and behavioural economics.

Critical Note:
When habit formation is intentionally engineered, it shifts behaviour from conscious choice to conditioned response. This reduces autonomy while increasing predictability and extractable engagement, particularly when habits are aligned with profit or control rather than user wellbeing.
