Gamification Mechanics

Definition:
Gamification mechanics are design elements borrowed from games that are applied to non-game contexts to shape behaviour, motivation, and engagement.

Usage Context:
Seen in digital platforms, workplaces, education systems, fitness apps, productivity tools, and marketing strategies.

Critical Note:
Gamification mechanics exploit reward systems, progress tracking, and social comparison to encourage compliance and sustained engagement. When used without transparency or consent, they shift motivation from intrinsic purpose to extrinsic control, often masking extraction as play.
