Executive Dysfunction

Definition:
Executive dysfunction refers to difficulty with the brain processes that manage planning, prioritisation, task initiation, time management, emotional regulation, and working memory. It is not a lack of intelligence, motivation, or care, but a disruption in the systems that translate intention into action.

Usage Context:
Often discussed in ADHD, autism, depression, and brain injury contexts. It is frequently misunderstood as laziness or irresponsibility, particularly in work, education, and bureaucratic systems that assume consistent self-management.

Critical Note:
Executive dysfunction is routinely moralised under capitalist value systems, where productivity and self-discipline are treated as measures of worth. This framing ignores neurological reality and shifts systemic failure onto individuals.
