Cognitive Overload

Definition:
Cognitive overload occurs when the volume, complexity, or pace of information exceeds an individual’s capacity to process it effectively.

Usage Context:
Seen in bureaucratic processes, digital interfaces, crisis communication, workplaces, benefits systems, and platform environments.

Critical Note:
Cognitive overload is rarely accidental. When systems overwhelm attention and processing capacity, compliance increases while critical engagement decreases. Overload becomes a quiet mechanism for error, withdrawal, or forced simplification.
