Spoons

Definition:
Spoons are a metaphor used to describe a limited supply of physical, emotional, or cognitive energy available to a person, particularly someone with a chronic condition, disability, or neurodivergence. Each task or demand consumes a certain number of spoons, and once they are depleted, functioning becomes significantly harder or impossible.

Usage Context:
Frequently used in disability, chronic illness, and neurodivergent communities to explain fluctuating capacity, energy budgeting, and the hidden cost of everyday activities. Often appears in phrases such as “I don’t have the spoons for that today.”

Critical Note:
The spoons metaphor is useful for communicating invisible limitations, but it can be misunderstood or trivialised by systems that expect consistent productivity. When institutions treat spoon depletion as a personal failing rather than a structural issue, the metaphor risks being absorbed into a productivity framework rather than prompting meaningful accommodation or reduced demands.
